Wolf Journey Book Five – The Sustainable Citizen features certificate goals of energy conservation and self-sufficiency on the path to becoming your local Permaculture Pioneer.
We live in the modern world, where the very existence of humans threatens the environmental health of the planet. We were the cause of the mass extinction of mega-fauna 10,000 years ago due to the perfection we attained while hunter-gatherers. Now, we have been causing the extinction of myriad creatures great and small – possibly including ourselves – through mass development over the past couple centuries which is now catastrophically changing the world’s climate.
Not to fear: the field of “permaculture” has a solution. This theory and lifestyle of appropriate living is explained in Book Five, but moreover, emphasizes a view that the youth of today are optimistic: they “Feel the Bern” so to speak. Supposedly cynical Generation Xers, children of “hippies” who said they “already tried changing the world and it didn’t work.” But it did: the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act along with diligent work by conservation organizations gave us breath we have today that shines in comparison to developing nations, brought fish back into myriad wetland systems, and saved countless acres of wildlife habitat. The eagles, swans and numerous other animals are back, where virtually none were left two generations ago.
Today, green energy is rapidly taking market share from big oil and coal. The new generation sees hope and opportunity, mandated by the environment to create a better world, and the youth of today will build it. All of us can be a part of this revolution, cultivating the environment in a way that benefits nature as well as humans. And we can’t emphasize this enough: those who don’t know nature to the profundity you will after completing this course are taking huge risks, no matter how good their intentions may be, when setting economic and environmental policy.
Book Five of Wolf Journey is a guide to help you step back into the world in a way which makes your footprint on the earth as light as possible. The course flows from the previous which taught traditional bushcraft skills, and extends those skills into the agricultural arena, starting with how to honor plants and animals raised at home or on a farm. The course starts from the beginning, teaching you to utilize plants and animal parts which are wasted in our consumer society, and how to turn them into building blocks for crafts still needed in modern community. By the time you are done with this course, you’ll be adept at harvesting plants, animals and minerals with the confidence that you will never waste resources again. Rather, you’ll honor life as a true modern pioneer, and become a critical resource to your community.
