August 12-16, 2024 at the Lake Sammamish Hans Jensen Group Camp
Join us for this new camp theme if you love the earth and working with the land, delving into restoration of the local environment and strategies to reverse the impacts of climate change. Based on a philosophy of the ancient scout, a scout must live with honor, balance, and in harmony with the earth in order to blend in with nature and move like a shadow across a wide array of terrain types. We will explore basic martial arts and learn to use tricks of mind-over-matter to help us accomplish feats that seem impossible.
Camp Goals & Skills Covered:
The primary goal of Advanced Conservation Scouts is to teach participants how to blend into nature; social circles; and use their position to influence positive change in the world. Our plan is to design and implement restoration projects at the Hans Jensen Group Camp, enhancing salmon and other wildlife habitats. Laughing Jacobs Creek that runs through the Hans Jensen Group Camp is one of only 3 creeks which still have actively spawning Kokanee (Lake Sammamish resident Sockeye Salmon) so it needs some TLC. Campers will harvesting invasive species where they crowd native species, removing (after eating) blackberries in preparation for shade tree planting, shoring up trails to reduce erosion, and transplanting shrubs to block human incursion into sensitive habitats. Campers will gain a profound understanding of climate change, create strategies to become carbon neutral and brainstorm strategies available to reverse global warming as well as mitigate its effects. Skills covered during this camp session include, but are not limited to:
- Selfless Service with Stealth & Camouflage;
- Silent Communication, Morals & Teamwork;
- Self-sacrifice for the benefit of the community;
- Intuition, purpose, wits, and courage.
