Join us for an amazing introduction to herbal medicine and wild edible plants, traditional fire-making, plant crafts and much more.
Get hands-on experience with the Top 10 Most Important Plants for health and survival: roast fresh cattails over the fire; make tasty pesto from nettles and pine nuts; and bake pancakes made from acorn flour. Make teas, salves, oils, tinctures, syrups, and other concoctions for health and medicine all of which you will take home when you depart.
We will also spend time focusing on personal health and relaxation with our unique spa day. By the time this incredible week ends, you will be well on your way to becoming a knowledgeable herbalist and wild gourmet chef!
Camp Goals & Skills Covered
The goal of this expedition is to provide participants with hands-on learning about Wild Edible Foods & Herbal Medicine. Skills covered include:
- How to harvest, process and store the Top 10 Edible Plants;
- How to understand the meaning of plant characteristics (astringents, etc.);
- How to harvest, process and administer the most important medicinal herbs of the northwest;
- How to honorably harvest and process plants;
- How to make fire, cook over an open fire, and “rock boil”;
- How to make rope from stinging nettle, cattail; cedar bark, and fire weed;
- How to harvest and cook with cattails, and hazelnuts;
- How to make a medicine pouch to fill with your personal herbs;
- How to dry and store herbs to take home, make herbal chocolates;
- How to purify water naturally for cleansing wounds and making teas;
- How to use a map and compass;
- Practice wilderness medicine emergency response scenarios;
- How to make and maintain fire in any weather, and witness traditional fire by friction;
- Learn Easy Plant Drawing and complete Journal Entries on your healing plants, and on corresponding poisonous plants;
- How to make a medicine pouch, dream catcher, and small collecting basket;
- How to dry and store herbs to take home;
- How to make salves, oils, tinctures and other medicines to take home;
- Learn knife safety so you can carry a knife for harvesting.
Ages & Prerequisites
TEEN GROUP: No Prerequisite for Ages 13-15. Ages 16-18 also accepted into the teen group with prerequisite of at least one previous camp, class series or workshop with us.
PRE-TEEN GROUP: No Prerequisite for Ages 11-12. Ages 9-10 also accepted with prerequisite of at least one previous camp, workshop, virtual program or multi-class series with us. No exceptions this year. Options if you haven’t attended anything with us in the past include registering for Spring Family Workshops, Puyallup Day Camps or a Lake Sammamish Day Camp taking place in advance of this week.
Notes: This theme, in its 21st year, is excellent for focused learners, as it is like a mini-college course on herbalism (although very hands-on). It is not recommended for adhd students. Arrival, Departure, Directions & Transportation Options
Sunday Arrival Options:
Complimentary 4-5 PM Park Arrival Option: Meet at the Lake Sammamish Hans Jensen GROUP CAMP, 4460 East Lake Sammamish Pkwy SE, Issaquah WA 98029 located ACROSS the parkway from the EAST Lake Sammamish BOAT LANDING. Arrive on Sunday between 4:00-5:00 p.m. for orientations and tent set-up. We’ll have food from 5:15-5:45 for those who didn’t eat dinner already and we also welcome you to bring healthy hors d’oeuvres or a pot-luck dish to share. We start with a welcoming at 5:30 with introductions and an overview of the week. Accompanying friends/family may depart by 6:00.
$50 Puyallup Arrival Option: Meet us at the Wolf Campus, 1026 14th St SW in Puyallup on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. so that participants can travel with us to our camp location.
$50 Seattle Airport, Bus or Train Arrival Option: Book your arrival into Seattle-Tacoma on Sunday in time to meet our pick-up vehicle at 2:30 p.m., but be sure to call or email us with arrival times before confirming your plans. Pick-up at baggage claim unless unaccompanied minor, then at gate or unaccompanied minor waiting area.
Weekend Departure Options:
Complimentary Friday Dinnertime Departure Option: Family & Friends are invited to arrive at the Hans Jensen Group Camp, 4450 East Lake Sammamish Pkwy SE, Issaquah WA 98029 on Friday between 4:00-4:30 and join us for our closing presentations and workshop from 4:30-5:30. Packing and departure will be from 5:30-6:00. Please don’t leave before 5:30 since the closing circle is very important for integration of this profound camp experience.
$25 Friday Evening Lake Sammamish Departure Option: Participants can stay late for dinner, campfire, and helping us reorganize camp for the following week, with departure anytime between 6:00-8:00. Although we encourage you to arrive by 4:30 for the workshop and closing ceremonies, we also know that traffic is maddening before 7 pm, so shoot for 8 pm and we’ll see you at the gate. $50 Friday Evening Seattle Amtrak, Ferry Terminal or SeaTac Departure Option: Get dropped off at SeaTac Airport, the Seattle Ferry Terminal, or the Amtrak Train Station, lower level next to the big CenturyLink Field parking lot at the end of S. King Street on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
$50 Friday Evening Puyallup Departure Option: Participants travel back to Puyallup with us and get picked up from the Wolf Camp home office at 1026 14th St SW between 8:00-9:00 pm.
$100 Saturday Morning Lake Sammamish or Puyallup Departure: Participants can stay overnight with us on Friday and depart before 12:00 noon on Saturday. Dinner and breakfast provided.
$150 Saturday Late Morning-Afternoon SeaTac Airport Departure: Participants can stay overnight with us on Friday, and then get dropped off at the Airport/Bus/Train Station in Seattle-Tacoma in the late morning for afternoon flights. Drop-off at security unless unaccompanied minor, then at gate.
$275 Full Week Stayover Option: Participants can stay over the weekend with us before joining us for the following overnight camp week. All meals, laundry, etc. provided.

Refund Policy: Deposits ($100 for day programs, $200 for overnight programs) are not refundable unless we don’t accept your application. If you cancel for any reason, you may receive a full credit good through the following calendar year on appropriate and available programs listed on our schedule, although an additional deposit is needed to secure your spot in the future program. If a program you sign up for is canceled and not rescheduled at a time you can attend, you may receive a full refund except in cases of natural (weather, geologic, wildfire, etc) disasters, grid failures, epidemics, government shutdowns, conflicts or curfews, or other unforeseen emergencies making it unsafe for staff and/or attendees to reach or use program locations, in which case all payments made will be held by us without expiration date for your future use in appropriate/available programs of your choice. Reasons include the expenditure of funds (property rentals, advertising, materials, admin staff time, etc.) long before programs take place, i.e. deposits make it feasible for Wolf Camp to schedule programs in the first place, but our mutually understood agreement is that Wolf Camp will run the program at the safest available time in the future. Finally, no refund, nor credit, is given if a participant is asked to leave a program for inappropriateness as determined by our kids, youth and adult agreements for participation.

Most Asked Question: What are bathroom and sleeping arrangements like? Bathrooms are primitive, and we train campers in wilderness hygiene and private outdoor bathing methods as part of their learning experience. We provide camping tents, and campers may have (or bring) their own, or share one with others, depending on pandemic protocols. We recommend you bring your own pillow, sleeping bag and foam pad, although we have extras if needed. Click on packing list above for more details.
