Part-Time Apprenticeship: The Wilderness Survival Scout

The Survival Scout Apprenticeship is a wilderness skills training program with an ethic of cultural conservation. It may be repeated for an additional semester to earn Survival Specialist certification upon accreditation. Kim & Chris Chisholm will be your guides throughout the apprenticeship.

2018 Dates are March 10 – June 16 and includes all the Saturday Workshops taking place each weekend, Wolf Journey Study Days, as well as guidance through the Wolf Journey Earth Conservation Courses with emphasis on Book III – Trail of the Wildlife Tracker, Book IV – Trail of the Survival Scout, and Book V: Trail of the Ancient Artisan.

March 24 Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Hides Workshop: Tanning Leather  & Parfleche Drums from 10:30-5:30 in Puyallup WA. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

March 31 Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Archery Workshop: Making Bows, Arrows & At-Latls from 10:30-5:30 in Puyallup WA. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

April 7 Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Backcountry Navigation & Leadership workshop from 10:30-5:30 in Puyallup WA. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

April 14 Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Wildlife Safety, Awareness, Tracks & Trails  workshop from 10:30-5:30 near Mt Rainier just 30 minutes from Tacoma WA. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

April 21 – Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim at the Puyallup Farmer’s Market Earth Day Celebration at 9:00-2:00; Visit Chris & Kim’s study site from 2:30-5:30. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

April 28 – Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Tracking the Teanaway Wolf Pack from 10:30-5:30 along the Teanaway River near Cle Elum. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

May 5 Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Wilderness Survival including Bow Drill Fire Making workshop from 10:30-5:30 near Tacoma WA. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

May 12 Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Wild Edible Plant Foraging & Herbal Medicine Making workshop from 10:30-5:30 in Puyallup WA. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

May 19Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Edible Seaweeds & Shellfish of the Salish Sea workshop from 10:30-5:30 at Deception Pass WA. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

June 9 – Apprentice Gathering with Chris & Kim from 9:00-10:00; Subsistence Shore Fishing on Piers, Rivers & Lakes workshop from 10:30-5:30 near Tacoma WA. Work on Wolf Journey field experiences at home during the week.

June 16 – Graduation Campfire Party from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

Choose Your Participation Level

There are three levels at which you can participate in this program. First, you can simply enjoy the course and graduate by attending weekly classes or workshops during one semester, and completing introductory field exercises from Book I – Trail of the Neighborhood Naturalist and Book IV – Trail of the Survival Scout.

Second, you can work toward a Survival Scout certificate by completing the above work, the equivalent of two semesters of classes and workshops, and passing evaluations including Outdoor Awareness Level III, Ethnobotany Level I, Ethnozoology Level I, Ethnogeology Level I, Track & Sign Level I, Trailing Level I and Environmental Pedagogy Level I.  which are available to take in May and September.

Third, you can become a certified Survival Specialist by completing the above, spending the equivalent of one summer of expeditions and two semesters of classes and workshops with us, and passing the above evaluations to Level III, completing Book II – Trail of the Traditional Herbalist, Book III – Trail of the Wildlife Tracker,and Book V: Trail of the Ancient Artisan.

Refund Policy: Standard deposits ($75 for day programs, $175 for overnight programs) are not refundable unless we don’t accept your application. If you cancel for any reason, you may receive a full credit good through the following calendar year on appropriate and available programs listed on our schedule, although an additional deposit may be required to secure your spot in the future program. If a program you sign up for is canceled and not rescheduled at a time you can attend, you may receive a full refund except in case of natural (weather, geologic, etc) disasters, government shutdowns, conflicts or curfews, or other unforeseen emergencies making it impossible for staff and/or attendees to reach or use program locations, in which case all payments made will be held by us without expiration date for your future use in appropriate/available programs of your choice. No refund, nor credit, is given if a participant is asked to leave a program for inappropriateness as determined by our kids, youth and adult agreements for participation.
